The ‘Heart Disease and Stroke Action Plan’ published in June 2009 identified the need to provide specialist training for nurses and to increase the range of opportunities for all staff to gain the knowledge and skills required in stroke care.

Following the successful launch of the Stroke Core Competencies website in May 2008 additional funding was secured from the Scottish Government Health Directorate to develop this more advanced e-learning resource aimed specifically at staff working in stroke units.

The key stakeholders involved in the project are Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland, University of Edinburgh and NHS Education for Scotland as well as a national steering group which includes expert stroke clinicians.
